Toronto puzzled by two-lane road with only one lane closed for months

Drivers have been mystified by a double yellow line around a road with just one lane closed for months.

Toronto’s city transportation director Bill Dixon has asked Toronto police to get to the bottom of why the road was closed during the morning rush hour.

“It can’t be a permanent situation … that’s a dark cloud over our heads,” Dixon told the Toronto Star.

Surrounding streets are scheduled to close for the warm summer months. Most people expected the closure of Yonge Street between Dundas and Spadina for a storm drain project.

“People were confused and just didn’t know what the big deal was,” Dixon said. “I know they were annoyed.”

Surrounded roads are subject to building projects or other infrastructure or maintenance tasks and are closed temporarily to allow some digging or other work to take place.

“Look out next week. There will be another one out there,” Dixon said.

Police confirmed the possibility of a government shutdown on Toronto streets, after the Canadian Press reported the possibility Wednesday.
