Nigeria is getting $60 million worth of ice cream warehouses

A proposal to establish frozen food storage warehouses in Nigeria aimed at helping curb food scarcity and the threat of terrorism has been completed. Global Projects Unlimited, a Washington-based consulting and management firm, led a group of investors to propose the $60 million project.

“With this investment, we’re able to bring additional life to the poorest rural communities, supporting a vital food security strategy,” said Prince Abubakar Tutare, founder of Global Projects Unlimited.

The first refrigerated freezers will be located in Monguno and Bebi-Abuja, Nigeria. The infrastructure and logistics to supply commercial quantities of food through the cold storage warehouses are largely complete.

The 32,000-square-foot refrigerated storage facilities are expected to be completed by the end of 2020 and the warehouses built in stages. The initial first phase of the project is expected to be complete by May 31, 2019.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has pledged to provide 50,000 dollars to the construction of the warehouses. According to USAID, this would fund the construction of one warehouse, which will house up to 1,000 metric tons of commercial and agricultural commodities.

According to GDI, the final stages of the project include connecting the cold storage facilities to the Nigerian national grid, negotiating with the National Energy Commission to distribute a link of electricity and building a rail line for vehicles to transport the warehouses between the sites.

GDI states that there are a majority of large markets in Nigeria that are inaccessible to families without the necessary transportation or without monetary resources to purchase one. The refrigerated warehouses are able to improve access and reduce demand for one of the primary human consumption commodities.
