The 48-year-old’s family members called police and did not immediately reveal the cause of death

The daughter of Malcolm X was found dead in a fifth-floor apartment in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday.

The city medical examiner’s office said on Thursday that Regina Marie Malcolm, 48, died from natural causes, but details about the circumstances leading to her death were unavailable.

The New York police department said that her family members called 911 and said she was not breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene, the department said.

Malcolm was the daughter of Malcolm X, who assassinated himself in 1965, when Regina was a teenager.

In recent years, she had been living with her brother Malcolm Shabazz in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Her brother said she was a child star.

“She was one of our best friends,” he said. “We were in constant contact, even recently and a few weeks before she died.”

By way of explanation, he added: “Just from the way she appeared, especially as a kid, from when she was around us, she was always very bubbly and forward-thinking.”

He also noted that she was a very small person who developed an eating disorder that involved heavy amounts of salt.

Malcolm Shabazz said that one of her last public appearances was at the Tony Awards in New York City on 13 May.

“I talked to her just last night,” he said. “She was very happy to come. She really enjoyed it. She was really excited. She was talking about traveling, but there was no indication that something was terribly wrong.”

The funeral for Regina Malcolm is set for later this week.
