Grammy nominations to be announced for the first time since big changes

Three weeks after an upsurge in diversity, music fans are now anticipating the nominations for the 61st Grammy awards, to be announced on Thursday. Last year, the big names on the nominee list included Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino, Jay-Z and Bruno Mars, but a handful of emerging artists were not given much attention.

Although Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars are the big names tipped for the top prizes, fans will be eager to see what the under-represented underground is getting up to. Gucci Mane is expected to be nominated for Outstanding New Artist, while Father John Misty may be recognised in the hard-to-predict non-classical rock category.

Norwegian duo Arielle Dombasle and Marte Waanen could also receive a Grammy nod.

Ahead of the announcement, Jim McIntyre, the head of the Grammys, has expressed hope that record sales will increase during the forthcoming ceremony, describing the record industry as “an eclectic stew of business models”.

Last year, an unprecedented 13 artists were nominated for album of the year, an unprecedented feat previously only claimed by the Beatles and country music legend Hank Williams. All will be vying for the top prize again, including Lamar’s critically acclaimed Black Panther soundtrack and Drake’s More Life.

Elsewhere, Ed Sheeran is expected to pick up a few more nominations this year, after garnering five last year, while Kendrick Lamar is tipped to receive up to six nominations, primarily in the rap and R&B categories.

Last year saw Kendrick Lamar triumph with seven nominations, winning two awards.
