Singer Davido has said he will donate $600,000 (£414,000) to charity after making a plea on Instagram.

Davido, a 23-year-old Nigerian, said he had set up the charity after an interview in which he criticised forces of famine, disease and suffering in Nigeria.

In the interview with the Nigerian daily ThisDay, he was asked how much money he had in the bank and explained that most of it was in the form of salaries for banks.

The singer said he would use his next album to donate money to charity.

“Please, use this money so it impacts people. I cannot help everybody but one day, I want to help millions of my friends,” he said.

“You people keep underestimating me, as if I have money. I have $600,000, I intend to give it away,” he said.

When ItDay pointed out that the money did not count as donations to Nigerian groups, Davido replied: “Our problems are too many to make such an assessment.

“Let’s use our time to look out for one another, not look at how much you have at home and how much someone has in London.”

After the post, many people called for the singer to start a foundation, while others were critical of his comments.

Celebrity blogger Bode Ayemideh tweeted: “Adios @Davido how is this statement helping your society. You have a responsibility. Politics is a part of that. WE got a responsibility.”

“I think Davido had the perfect opportunity to make this right and shed light on the problem with the tragedy happening in Nigerians who are living in abject poverty. But he instead chose to use a platform to kick people. What is it?” @Project_opendreams wrote.

Using her twitter account, Davido’s Nigerian reality TV show co-star Tiwa Savage called Davido’s remarks on hunger “crazy”, saying she “wants to shout” him down for his comments.

Nigeria is one of the world’s five most food-deficit countries.

Davido is one of Nigeria’s most popular musicians, with more than 300,000 followers on Instagram.
